of doing interesting things to write about them. Went with my best beloved to Edinburgh today, and spent a happy couple of hours looking at the paintings in the National Gallery. Stand-outs included a wonderful bust of one of the Fates, which close up was so grotesque as to seem hysterical, but seen from a modest distance snapped into focus and worked, and a painting called 'Voltaire' by the Scottish artist Quiller Orchardson, of whom I had never heard. It was the kind of Victorian narrative painting where if you didn't know the narrative, you would have no chance of working it out from the painting. But, it worked because of the faces. Bored, reluctant, slightly ashamed... One chap at the back looked to be listening so intently, while the lad to his left lounged bonelessly on his chair and grinned at nothing. I loved it - I believed in the people. We also saw some fabulous needlework - the subject matter (four allegorical scenes from a short story) was a bit 'so what' but the craft was tremendous, and some nice animal pictures.

If keeping a journal encourages me to go round more galleries, it will be a good thing.
