Dances with Samurai?

I saw The Last Samurai again today, ostensibly for costume research, but really because I fancied being melancholy for a bit. It's an effective little film - I find I never watch it with my whole brain - all the bits that should be fretting about orientalism and the dangers of idealising other (generally safely dead) cultures are anaesthatised by sentiment and beauty. Oh well - I can't be analytical all the time.
